Back to School Safety Advice for Local Families

As children across our community return to school, West Midlands Police is reminding parents, carers and young people of some simple steps that can help keep everyone safe and confident during the school day.

The return to school often means busier roads, new routines and, for some children, new journeys. Spending a little time planning ahead can make a big difference.

Getting to and from School Safely

Parents and carers are encouraged to plan and practise school journeys with their children, especially if they are starting a new school or travelling independently for the first time.

Walk or cycle the route together before term begins so children know where they are going and feel confident.

Encourage children to travel with friends or siblings where possible.

Remind them to stick to well-lit, busy routes and avoid shortcuts through parks, alleyways or quiet areas.

If children use public transport, make sure they know how to stay aware of their surroundings and what to do if services are delayed.

Staying Safe Away from Home

It’s important for children to know how to handle unexpected situations.

Children should never accept lifts or gifts from people they don’t know.

Agree a trusted list of adults they can go to if they need help.

Consider setting a family code word so children know when it is safe to go with someone unexpected.

Make sure children know important contact numbers or have them saved on a phone.

Looking After Belongings

Lost or stolen items can be upsetting and disruptive.

Clearly label school bags, coats and lunch boxes.

Encourage children not to take valuable items or large amounts of money to school.

If children carry mobile phones, remind them to keep them out of sight when not in use and avoid using them in isolated areas.

Online Safety

Staying safe doesn’t stop at the school gate.

Talk to children about keeping personal information private online, including their location and daily routines.

Encourage safe use of social media and remind them not to accept friend requests from people they don’t know.

Make sure children know to speak to a trusted adult if they experience or see bullying or worrying behaviour online.

Working Together as a Community

Schools, families and local communities all play a role in keeping children safe.

Get to know school staff and stay informed about school safety procedures.

Encourage children to speak openly about their day and any concerns they may have.

Report suspicious or concerning behaviour to the police so action can be taken early.

By talking regularly about safety and keeping communication open, we can help children feel supported, confident and ready to enjoy the school year ahead.
